Fanzines

In 2019 I discovered something truly wonderful : fanzines ! Not exactly the punk diy fanzines that were distributed decades ago, but a new form of it, made by fans of a series for other fans. Fanzines by fan artists and writers, with merch, most of the time physical/printed but also digital only. In the One Piece community, there was lots of them, and in 2020 I had the luck and pleasure to participate in my first fanzine : "Women! Wanted Zine". After that, I candidated to other fanzines but unfortunatly never was taken. The same team from W!WZ later decided to bring life to a joke we made on April 1st : create a Usopp fanzine ! This one was digital only and free, with an invitation to donate to the same charity we dedicated the W!WZ's benefits to : Malala Fund.

Women! Wanted Zine

A charity fanzine for Malala Fund, an organisation for education and equal rights of girls and women all around the world, created by Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She fought for girls' right to school and got shot in the head by a man.
W!WZ is a One Piece fanzine focusing on the women characters. It featured 58 characters in a 156 pages A4 printed zine, containing both illustration and fictions. Each character featured got a double page with their portrait, little biography, an illustration and a fanfiction. There was also a lot of merch, including prints, a memory card game, pin's & badges, stickers, bookmarks, a tote-bag, a bonus mini-zine and anthology... There were 87 contributors to this zine, moderators included !
I was Jewelry Bonney's illustrator, teaming up with OnceABlueMoon as her writer to create her double-page. And I was also part of the Art Moderation team, reviewing contributors' art at checkpoints to help them make the best illustration ever.

My art for Jewelry Bonney

For this zine I made : an illustration, a portrait, a divider and a jolly roger !

Here's a peak at the full double-page.

Usopp! Wanted Zine

This one started as a joke on April 1st - Usopp's birthday - every year since the W!WZ started. The mod team joked online that the zine was replaced with a Usopp-centric one. And a few years after, well... It became true ! Usopp's lies always come to life, you do know that. It was within the W!WZ team so there was no applications, we just asked who wanted to participate and gave a deadline and we each made an illustration or fiction freely. I did one of my best pieces for this zine, I'm preally proud of it. It released on April 1st of 2022 as a free digital fanzine, with an invitation to donate to Malala Fund once again.

My art for Usopp

For this piece I decided to go back to Thriller Bark and Usopp's fight against Perona. It was both so fun and cool ! I had a lot of fun drawing this and it took me a while. I'm really proud of the result. Making Usopp look stronger and taller than he is against a scared Perona on the floor, with her ghosts hiding in the background, was really cool. I made an effort with colours and ambiance and for 2021-2022 it was still a hard thing for me.

My favourite fanzines

As I said in the introduction, W!WZ and the Usopp zine were the only zines I've participated in yet. But there were many gorgeous fanzines, and some of them I candidated but wasn't taken. I want to share them because they are really wonderful. And let's say it now : keep an eye on the upcoming Volume 3 of Feast Zine. This one, you can give your money away without any worry, it's splendid.
